"Misfortune Cookie" The Conclusion - TRIPLE-SIZED Episode!

At last!... Bringin' Newt and John Home!

Ok, I admit, I didn't expect to just leave Newt and John on the other side of the world, trying to hitch-hike their way home for the last few months... but better late than never, I'm finishing this very long story that I started in an oversized Paper Airplane, way back in April of 2010. I'm happy to tell you I'll soon be posting new comics with new ideas and new shorter multi-episodes coming soon!!!  Read more »

"BOTTOMLESS PITIFUL - PART 5" - TRIPLE-SIZED Episode!

Bottoms-up!

As a weekly reader of this comic, it may have felt like a long time to get here, but when the pages are in a book layout, it's really a short amount of reading time from the point Newt and John enter the 'bottomless pit' to the point the fall out (or up!) the other side. The challenge has been keeping it interesting, creating light-sources, and reminding new readers the characters are actually falling in every panel, since I didn't want to show them motion-blurred for every shot. Read more »

"BOTTOMLESS PITIFUL - PART 2" - TRIPLE-SIZED Newt and John Episode!

EGAD!.. What was that thing?!?

This was a fun, and challenging episode, as far as the art goes. I wanted to show a gradual transition into darkness as they fall further away from the entrance to the 'bottomless pit'... which also... (thankfully!)... leads to the next episode (coming soon!) where I am granted a little break from elaborate artwork while Newt and John fall in absolute darkness.

So for this commentary, I'll try something a little different. I'll break down the 3 main "photograph scenes" and tell you how each one was made. Read more »

"BOTTOMLESS PITIFUL - PART 1" - Continued from Episode 36!

The Title has Changed but our Story Continues!

I decided to change the name of this on-going story, as "Paper Air Pains" no longer applied. I'm planning to change the name again soon (when it's appropriate) to finish off the story. So I guess I'll have made a Trilogy when the story comes to an end.

I've had the idea for using a bottomless pit in this comic for several years... and I liked how I could use it to save Newt and John from certain death... but also the gags I can do with it. I've written this story to the end, with some good dialogue and sight-gags coming up... so I hope you'll come back each week and check it out! Read more »

"PAPER AIR PAINS - PART 13" - Double-Issue Newt and John Episode!

What would you think about in your last moments?...

I wrote this episode a couple months ago, with only the images in my head of the two of them falling and either having a slap-fight, or wrestling. The posing was tricky, as it's easy to overlap these two, and make it so you can see their expression, or it wouldn't feel like they're struggling with each other. In the 9th panel (4 from the end), I like how Newt looks like he's setting John up for the ultimate World Wrestling Federation "PILEDRIVER" move. Read more »

"PAPER AIR PAINS - PART 12" - Double-Issue Newt and John Episode!

What goes up...

Well, it seems that John's unbeatable Paper Airplane has one weakness! I had some fun making it look more and more disintegrated over the first 5 panels. Read more »

"PAPER AIR PAINS - PART 11" - TRIPLE-SIZED Newt and John Episode!

A TRIPLE-SIZED COMIC SHOWDOWN!!!

This 3-page episode took a lot longer than expected to finish. I originally granted myself the equivalent 3 weeks to do it... but it is summer time which tends to mean visiting family and taking some weekend trips more... The comic had to be put on hold. But fear not true believers! Newt and John continue! Read more »

"PAPER AIR PAINS - PART 10" - New Newt and John Episode!

In all it's green glory!.. The worlds biggest Olive on a Toothpick!

When Newt originally talked about this back in PART 5, I wasn't entirely sure I'd ever show it. But the idea just sounded too cool not to use it. Well, cool as far as a road-side attraction goes.

Both the United States and Canada are famous for their Giant Roadside Attractions and over-sized novelties. It's all about attracting tourists and passer-by's to the small towns. Everything from giant Wooden Nickels, to a giant Muskoka Chair (wooden patio chair), to a Giant Moose can be found along Canadian highways. The idea of a giant Olive on a toothpick sounded possible... but, "Oh the Humanity!" if it comes crashing down! Read more »

"PAPER AIR PAINS - PART 9" - New Newt and John Episode!

Yep... I'm building to something.

I decided to use this episode as a 'bridge' between the last double-issues, and the next story where Newt and John make another unique attempt to take down the last military jet. I liked changing the setting and the altitude a little in this episode by showing a chase through the rocky canyon they've been flying over all this time. It also helps establish, just how well the military pilot can keep up with them. Read more »

Hasta-la Vista, Baby!  ANOTHER DOUBLE-SIZED ISSUE!

I like the way John seems to be living out some fantasy of being an Arnold Schwarzenegger-style of Action Hero... as though he's always wanted a chance to use some witty dialogue after a cool stunt or big explosion, but every line he knows is lame and cliche.
